The MPTC-03 Free-Hanging Multipoint Temperature Sensor is constructed for use in industrial processes where it is necessary to measure temperature at a number of points along a single assembly; it enables engineers to monitor temperature gradients and to understand the way in which temperatures change in reactors, columns and other types of process equipment by providing sensing elements at various locations.
The MPTC-03 differs from a guide-tube and heat-sink design in that it has a free-hanging sensor setup. Each thermocouple is fitted within the protective housing and may be removed separately without having to take out the other thermocouples. This makes field maintenance easier and results in a more economical multipoint design since it does not require a heat-sink contact system.
The MPTC-03 is available with Type K, J, T or N thermocouples ; for thermocouples, both grounded and ungrounded junctions are offered so that the sensing assembly can be matched to the requirements of the instrumentation and the process.
There is a wide variety of sheath materials to choose from, such as 304, 316 and 321 stainless steel, Inconel 600, Incoloy 800, Monel and Pyrosil D; and for the enclosure you can select either aluminum, stainless steel or cast iron, with the option of NEMA 4X and IP68 ratings for continuous outdoor use.
Typical examples are distillation and separation processes, temperature profiling in heat exchangers, polymerization, chemical processing, reactors, distillation columns, crude-oil desalting and fluidized catalytic cracking as well as visbreaking units.
For critical process installations the MPTC-03 can be provided with NIST-traceable temperature calibration up to 1200°C together with hazardous-location enclosures and radiographic examination, pressure testing and NDT testing if required.
The MPTC-03 is a multipoint temperature monitoring solution which is both serviceable and cost-effective for use in complicated industrial processes when it is necessary to take multiple temperature measurements from a single assembly.

Temperature Transmitter | Tempotech Controls Inc

A temperature transmitter takes the temperature data from a sensor, like an RTD or thermocouple, and converts it into a standard signal, usually 4-20mA or 0-10V. This signal can be sent to control systems, PLCs, or monitoring equipment to keep track of temperature in real-time.

Video Transcription: Temperature Transmitter Technology & Application
[00:05] A temperature transmitter is a critical component in industrial automation that converts low-level sensor signals into standardized outputs. This ensures accurate, reliable, and long-distance signal transmission for complex control systems.

[00:14] Thermocouple and RTD sensors are the industry standards for measuring the temperature of processed media. However, in challenging environments—characterized by high temperatures, electromagnetic interference (EMI), or long cable runs—the raw signals from these sensors can degrade.

[00:33] This signal degradation, often caused by wire resistance and electrical noise, can lead to inaccurate readings. To mitigate these issues, temperature transmitters are used to amplify, condition, and convert sensor data into a standardized 4-20mA output, ensuring high-integrity data across the plant.

[00:59] Several signal types are used depending on the application:

4 to 20 mA Analog Signal: The most common standard, highly resistant to noise and ideal for long distances.

0 to 10V: A common analog option, though more susceptible to signal loss over length.

Digital Signals (HART & Modbus): Used for advanced remote communication and diagnostics.

RS485/RS232: Essential for integrating transmitters with PLCs and SCADA systems.

[01:35] The Tempotech TT367 series temperature transmitters are engineered for versatility. They offer precise sensor-transmitter matching and robust protection against interference. Configurable via the HART protocol, these units allow for easy setup and reliable field operation.

[01:56] Key reliability features include open/short-circuit detection, incorrect wiring alerts, and NAMUR NE43 failure standards. The TT367 supports RTD, TC, Ohm, and Millivolt inputs, making it a universal solution for your instrumentation needs.

[02:26] With integrated dot-matrix displays and easy configuration options, our transmitters provide the precision you can trust. Contact our technical sales team today to find the best transmitter for your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the MPTC-03 Thermocouple

What is a free-hanging multipoint thermocouple?+

A free-hanging multipoint thermocouple uses multiple individual thermocouple elements within a single assembly to measure temperature at different locations or depths. This provides a more complete temperature profile and helps identify temperature gradients and hot spots within process equipment

What is the advantage of a free-hanging multipoint design?+

The free-hanging design provides a simpler, serviceable multipoint configuration. Individual thermocouple elements can be removed without removing the other thermocouples, helping reduce maintenance time when an element requires inspection or replacement

Can the sensing points be positioned at different locations?+

Yes. Multipoint thermocouples can be designed with sensing points evenly distributed along the assembly or positioned at custom distances from the probe tip to match the required temperature profile

What thermocouple types are available for the MPTC-03?+

The MPTC-03 is available with Type K, J, T and N thermocouples, allowing the sensor configuration to be selected according to the process temperature and application requirements

What is the benefit of using one multipoint assembly instead of several individual thermocouples?+

A multipoint assembly provides multiple temperature measurements through a single process connection. This can reduce the number of separate process penetrations while providing a detailed temperature profile across the equipment

Can the MPTC-03 be supplied for outdoor or hazardous locations?+

Yes. Enclosure options include NEMA 4X/IP68 configurations for demanding outdoor environments, with CSA, ATEX and FM explosion-proof enclosure options available for hazardous-location applications
