Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the TC102 Thermocouple

How do I select the correct protection tube material for temperature, oxidation and furnace atmosphere?+

For oxidizing atmospheres, consider 310 or 446 stainless steel, or Inconel 601 for more severe high-temperature service. For reducing atmospheres, Inconel 600 is generally preferred. 304 or 316 stainless steel may suit lower-temperature, less-corrosive applications. Always confirm compatibility with the furnace temperature and gas composition.

Should I specify a beaded thermocouple element or an MGO-PAC element for my furnace?+

Choose a beaded thermocouple element when a simple, economical construction and relatively fast response are priorities. The TC102 datasheet notes that beaded elements have low mass and therefore provide a fast response, but they are not recommended for highly oxidizing environments.Choose an MGO-PAC element when you need a more rugged construction with the thermocouple wires supported inside a mineral-insulated sheath. The TC102 is available with grounded or ungrounded MGO-PAC junctions, giving flexibility for different furnace and instrumentation requirements

How does protection tube diameter and Schedule 40, 80 or 160 affect sensor response and mechanical durability?+

A larger diameter or heavier-wall protection tube generally provides greater mechanical durability, but the additional mass can result in a slower temperature response. A lighter construction generally responds faster but provides less mechanical protection. For the TC102, Schedule 40, 80 and 160 protection-tube options are available. Selection should be based on the required mechanical protection, process conditions, and acceptable response time

What immersion length should be used to minimize temperature measurement error?+

A duplex thermocouple is useful when redundancy or two independent temperature signals are required from the same measurement point. The two elements can support separate control and monitoring systems or provide a backup signal if one measurement circuit fails. For applications requiring only one temperature signal, a single-element thermocouple is typically sufficient. The TC102 is available with single or duplex elements

Can the TC102 replace an existing furnace thermocouple while keeping the same flange, insertion length and connection head?+

Yes, The TC102 can be configured for replacement applications with different process connections, flange sizes, connection heads and extension lengths. When replacing an existing furnace thermocouple, provide the existing sensor’s thermocouple type, protection tube size and material, insertion length, flange or thread connection, and connection head details so the TC102 can be configured to match the installation as closely as possible

What causes premature protection tube or thermocouple failure in a furnace?+

Premature failure can occur when the protection tube material or thermocouple construction is not properly matched to the furnace temperature and process conditions. Excessive temperature, thermal cycling, oxidation, corrosive atmospheres, vibration, and mechanical stress can shorten sensor life. Selecting the correct protection tube material and construction for the actual furnace environment is important for reliable operation. The TC102 offers multiple stainless steel and Inconel protection tube options to accommodate different process requirements
