The TC111 Replacement Thermocouple Element offers a practical means of replacing worn or failed sensing elements while still allowing the use of the existing thermowells, protection tubes, and temperature assemblies. It is available in Type J or K, in either single or duplex configurations, and in the form of bare wire, insulated wire, or mineral-insulated (MI) cable, so that it can be set up to meet the measurement and installation needs of industrial process equipment.

The TC111 base metal replacement thermocouple element is intended for use in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of the temperature-sensing elements that are located inside existing thermowells and protection tubes. Rather than replacing the entire thermocouple assembly when the outer hardware is still serviceable, the TC111 offers a practical solution enabling the sensing element to be replaced while keeping the existing compatible components. It is also possible to set up the TC111 for direct temperature measurement if the application allows.
The TC111 is available in either Type N or Type K thermocouples and can be provided as a single or duplex element to enable standard or redundant temperature measurements. Engineers may choose among 8, 14, or 20 AWG thermocouple wire according to the required configuration.
There are several types of junctions available on the TC111 to meet different operating requirements, including a standard TIG-welded junction, an insulated hot junction, or a twist-and-TIG-welded junction; the twisted arrangement increases the mechanical strength of the junction and aids in reducing premature cracking.
The elements can be made with either bare wire or with ceramic insulation, and both oval and round ceramic insulators are available. In the case of duplex elements, round ceramic insulators are used. The immersion length can be customised in either inches or millimetres, which makes it easier to match the dimensions of an existing thermowell, protection tube, or industrial temperature assembly.
The TC111 is available with bare ends or with a ceramic terminal block, which makes it easier to integrate with compatible connection heads and with the existing control-system wiring.
The accuracy of the temperature measurements is in accordance with the tolerances specified in ASTM E608/E608M, IEC 60584, and ANSI MC96.1, and ASTM E220 calibration can be provided upon request.
For engineers, original equipment manufacturers, and maintenance crews, the TC111 is a configurable replacement for the thermocouple element which enables the extended useful life of existing temperature sensor assemblies without altering the required element type, dimensions, junction, insulation, or termination configuration.

My thermocouple has failed. Do I need to replace the complete assembly or only the TC111 element?+

If the existing thermowell or protection tube is still suitable for service, you may only need to replace the sensing element. The TC111 is specifically designed for use as a replacement insert in existing thermowells and protection tubes, which can avoid unnecessary replacement of serviceable hardware.

I don't know my existing element part number. What should I measure before ordering a TC111?+

Start by identifying the thermocouple type (J or K), single or duplex construction, overall required insertion length, wire size, insulation style, junction construction, and termination. The TC111 allows these parameters to be specified individually, making them more useful for replacement identification than the original part number alone.

Should I order 8, 14, or 20 AWG thermocouple wire?+

The TC111 offers 8, 14, and 20 AWG beaded-element options. Do not select wire size based only on temperature. It should match the available space inside the protection tube, ceramic insulation configuration, mechanical requirements, and existing assembly design.

When is a twist-and-TIG-welded junction a better choice?+

The twist-and-TIG-welded junction adds mechanical strength at the sensing junction and helps reduce premature cracking. It can be useful where junction durability is a concern. This option is available for single elements only.

Can I reuse the existing ceramic insulators when replacing the thermocouple element?+

The TC111 can be supplied with its own oval or round ceramic insulators, or as a bare element. Duplex elements are supplied with round ceramic insulators. Rather than assuming the existing insulation can be reused, specify the required insulation configuration when ordering the replacement element.

Should I order bare ends or a ceramic terminal block?+

Choose bare ends when the replacement element will connect to existing wiring or another termination arrangement. Choose a ceramic terminal block when you want the element terminated at a compatible connection head for convenient field wiring. Both configurations are available.
